Here are some tips on how to lead with “digital space”:

Stories – Stories have a powerful ability to communicate. People are wired to connect with stories better than with abstract concepts. How can you incorporate storytelling into your leadership? Share case studies with your team of others who have achieved what you hope to do, and discuss the principles behind the details that led to success. Jay and Stuart are masters at it. Don’t be afraid to share personal experiences that are applicable to the situation as well, and encourage your team members to share likewise. This will help the team connect on a more personal level. Also, when dealing with numbers and goals, find a way to break these figures down into something more personal and tangible. This too will help your team understand the scale of what you hope to accomplish.

Potential – A prospering team is a successful team. Encourage your teams’ potential in their pursuits both on and off the proverbial field, and you set the stage for a thriving venture. Helping team members pursue their interests and talents beyond the “digital” office will lead to a more fulfilled, efficient and effective team. There can be no greater monetizing activity than developing the digital skill-sets necessary for success in living the Digital Life. Show your team that you care about them as a person in large and small ways – being flexible with schedules where it makes sense, giving praise, showing an appropriate interest in their lives beyond the business. Be open to ideas from every level – you may be surprised by the insight into your business that a “newbie” may have. Remember also that newcomers get to look at your company with fresh eyes. Enthusiasm – Suze Ormon once said, “It’s impossible to inspire unless you’re inspired”.  You can’t give what you ain’t got, and it ain’t heat if it ain’t HOT! Passion and enthusiasm are palpable and VIRAL. If you have it, it’ll spread on to others. Remember, what your passion is can make a difference with how it affects others. Are you passionate about selling a product because it’ll benefit you? Or because of the solution it presents to your customer’s problems? What are your passions beyond the “deal”? Again, people connect with stories – and they connect with seeing what lights people’s fires. Help your team to see what drives you. Share it in a way that encourages participation and collaboration – hopefully they will catch the vision as well and become as driven as you to live the Digital Life Style!

Talk with contacts in both your personal and professional circles, asking them about what drives them, what they’ve learned recently, and how they’ve dealt with circumstances similar to what you’re facing. Don’t hesitate to ask follow-up questions, either – and it’s more effective to ask someone what they did next instead of how they felt, to ask how and what instead of just why. While the details of the experiences may not overlap, the insights they can share may apply.
  • Cross-pollinate – One of the best ways to refresh your frame of reference is to look at the world through a new set of eyes. Take time to read trade publications or blogs from industries outside of your own and see how the advice contained therein could apply to your business. How could scientific research methods apply to accounting or law? How can marketing tips help a doctor hone his or her craft? You’d be surprised.

Both you and your protégé should have clear expectations and results in mind when you enter into a mentoring relationship. Everything you do should work toward a shared goal. Seek out a protégé who has the ability to concentrate and focus. A strong drive is an important quality for success.

Additionally, your protégé should demonstrate willingness to apply what they learn from you to their own career paths. It is useless and frustrating to teach someone who does not intend to use that newfound knowledge. Avoid working with someone who desires only a connection to “important people”, and has no real wish to improve or learn.

  • Good communication and cooperative work skills

Just as you must be able to articulate your ideas, so must your protégé. Choose to work with someone who can communicate effectively; who expresses his or her qualifications and intentions clearly from the start. If you cannot understand what the candidate wants from the relationship, you cannot expect to meet goals on either end.

You also must be able to work together with your protégé. Beware of those who are too driven, or who seem intent on asserting their own merits. Often, the egocentric protégé will have already developed a sense of superiority that makes them difficult to work with, no matter how talented they might be. Drive is necessary—but so is a certain degree of humility.

  • A strong sense of personal responsibility

A successful businessperson takes responsibility for his own actions, whether they are good or bad. Be sure your protégé is able to accept responsibility and refrain from passing blame onto circumstances or other people.

In modern society, it is all too common to encounter overdeveloped senses of entitlement. Strive to work with a protégé who is self-aware and does not institutionalize or redirect blame. Unfortunately, a lack of personal responsibility can lead to legal complications and public spectacle.

  • Willingness to meet regularly

If you cannot meet with your protégé, it is impossible to form a relationship—that goes without saying. Be sure the person you choose to work with does not already have an overcrowded schedule. Both you and your protégé must be willing to be flexible. This can extend to social life as well: if a candidate insists on putting socialization and entertainment ahead of career in their priorities, you will not be able to gain much ground.

This is important on several levels. It must be worth the time you will spend mentoring, for both you and your protégé. You don’t want to end up training someone you will not be able to recommend to others. As a 4D mentor, you will be doing your protégé a favor by helping them succeed—but keep in mind that they’re also doing you a favor by providing you with experience, knowledge, and a new perspective on your industry. Neither you nor your protégé should feel superior to one another; 4D mentoring is a process of give and take. How do you select a protégé that best matches you and your skill-sets and avoid making poor choices?A successful protégé will possess certain qualities. Just as not all business executives, entrepreneurs and professionals make good mentors, not every newcomer will flourish as a protégé.

Here are some of the qualities you should keep in mind when selecting a protégé:
  • A commitment to expanding skills and capabilities

Good protégés want to learn. They are committed to themselves and their career, and will be grateful for your guidance. You do not want to work with someone who is content to merely report for work and bring home a paycheck each week. Try to select a protégé who displays genuine interest in the workings of your industry, and is truly excited about the prospect of a successful long-term career.

  • Receptive and open to new ideas and new ways of learning

An open mind is an essential key to business success. There are always new ideas, techniques, and methods that prove surprisingly effective. When picking a protégé, be sure your candidate is willing to consider possibilities outside the realm of his experience—and remember to keep an open mind yourself.

  • The ability to accept and act upon constructive criticism

Accepting criticism objectively is a difficult skill to master; applying it even more so. It will strain the relationship if you end up having to carefully monitor what you have to say in order to avoid hurt feelings.
